NY State Issues Additional CAURD (Retail Dispensary) Licenses

Due to this new court order, new licenses were issued in some of the most populous areas of NY state including Brooklyn, Queens, Buffalo, Syracuse, and the Hudson Valley.

NY’s Cannabis Control Board issued 108 CAURD licenses in the Central New York, Western New York, Mid-Hudson and Brooklyn regions that had been previously held up by a court injunction in a lawsuit.

These licenses are tied to specific applicants and can’t be given to others. This should lead to fast growth in the NY cannabis market now that the licenses held back by the lawsuit have became eligible to be awarded.

The cannabis control board announced last month that they plan to double the amount of total CAURD licenses awarded, it’s likely that more existing candidates in these regions could be approved, now that the injunction has been lifted, as the new cap has not yet been reached.

What is the CAURD Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary License?

The CAURD licensees are the first retail dispensaries to open for legal adult-use cannabis sales in New York State, and they are owned by justice-involved individuals. These licensees made the first legal cannabis sales in New York during 2022, which will accelerate investments into communities impacted by disproportionate cannabis prohibition enforcement.

This hold up in the court system is a great example of how cannabis business execution is never quite as you planned with the potential for extra delays. Having a strong consulting team and flexible financiers / budgets can help you mitigate these types of issues.

Ready to blaze a trail in the cannabis industry? The hunt for future Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) Licenses is on! Be one of the first to light up New York State by snagging a coveted License and begin selling adult-use cannabis.

Beware – the competition is fierce, and not everyone will make the cut.
